Sound Analysis

At the start for the first 20 seconds there is a traditional track that is known by thousands of people.( It's that tune often at the start of movies). We know it as 20th century movies to date. We know this institution '20th century fox' cover all genres- so the audience will be expecting anything from horror- romance, as most films are now hybrid genres e.g. ROM-Com-Zom.

After the 20th century opening sound, the music of the film starts to play. When it begins, it sounds like the surroundings are in a factory or some place with conveyor belts and then a pressure door/ vault of some sort opens, or maybe a machine. During this, a menacing sound fades in, so the audience expect something bad to happen. The ideology behind the sound track is very ominous, but then changes to a more pacey mood.

I think at the start of the piece, the wind like sound creates a nervous atmosphere and an unwary presence which creates tension. All of a sudden the music starts to rise in tempo and more sounds are added to create a running and racy effect with the drums that are added as if they were acting as a character's footsteps. This makes the audience heartbeat increase with the beat,if the intuition was targeting the passive audience. I think by the tempo and pitch of the music, it makes it sound more like an action cartoon due to the fast paced music and theme of the sounds in the clip. It ends with a victory won from a great battle- again with the different genres.

I think the sudden change in the music may act as if the character got caught and exposed while under stealth and has had to make a move before being captured. Similar music that has been used in mysterious or investigation, to get the audience think ahead, that the character may be in danger. After this part of music has passed, it calms down a bit and drums start to play more loudly giving it a military effect even though this may not be the case.

The mood of the music when it is coming towards the end around 2:40 becomes lighter as if something was successful in a mission. This music will most likely be found during the credits of an action/adventure film. With the smoothness and the speed of this part of the sound track it also relates with genre of action/adventure. When listening to it for the 3rd time, it makes me think it is used when the hero (from the Propp's theory) has come on screen or doing something significant to the narrative.

At the end of the music, it goes calm but still sounds eerie. You hear a noise at the end which sounds like a threat to the main character, if it was a film/TV program, this could be leading the audience on to make them think that another film/TV series is going to be made. This is also linked then Todorov's theory of the 5 stages of equilibrium. However, the intuition/ director has done this so the audience know that there will be a disruption involving this threat.

Phantom of the opera lighting analysis

The Phantom of the Opera has an interesting opening. It starts with the candle and the elegant gold looking writing. Because there is a use of a candle at the start, we immediately knows that this film is based in the early days where electricity was at is minimum and the revolution of technology had only just started. We know the film is set in the early 1900’s because of the writing in the top left which is hard to see, but you can just about see it.

At the beginning of the film, the scene is only in black and white and looks retro. This shows the age of the place the film is being shot at. The use of the black and white lighting creates a mysterious effect and makes the scene look old fashioned and unknown. In this scene there is a use of under lighting.

When the chandelier is shown, the whole atmosphere and lighting changes. Everything starts to come to life and colour starts to change from black and white to actual colour how you would see it with the naked eye we know this as high-key lighting. This is when more filler lights are used and looks more realistic to our eyes. When this happens, everything starts to run smoothly and there is nothing rough going on. It was as if the whole place had a massive makeover.
